On Wednesday, the Fay cross country team traveled to Roxbury for the Roxbury Latin Middle School Jamboree. We knew we were up against some tough competition in this race, as 9th graders were added to the mix. We were hopeful that we would have another strong showing and had our runners focus on passing any blue jerseys that they spotted along the course.
The Roxbury Latin course covers 2.2 miles through the woods and fields of campus, with a killer hill right at the end of each loop. From the start, our runners positioned themselves well and we could see a strong pack of red jerseys in the top pack. As the racers emerged from the hill for the second time, Shivam Sharma '15 was the first to appear from Fay. He finished in fifth place overall with a time of 14:00. There was a very strong lead pack and Shivam was one of the first underclassmen to cross the finish line. Next for Fay, in a career-changing race, was Jonathan Walker '15. Jonathan finished just thirteen seconds behind Shivam in a time of 14:13. He improved by over 70 places from last year, finishing in 10th overall. Andrew Daphnis '15 started the race feeling a bit under the weather, but he pulled through and had a strong 13th place finish (14:16). We couldn't have pulled off our team score without Andrew on Wednesday! Jack Thalmann '15 was next across the line, and the last Fay runner to receive a medal for his 15th place finish (14:18). Alfonso Pelaez '15 was our fifth runner on Wednesday, in what was his most impressive race of the season. Alfonso placed 34th overall in a time of 15:11.
On the girls side, Sally Lee '15 had an incredible race, finishing in 17th place overall in a time of 17:12. We look forward to watching Sally race again for Fay next year!
While we had some impressive races up front today, we could not overcome the deep and talented team from Belmont Hill. We finished in 2nd place overall (out of 13 teams total) with 74 points. Park School came in 3rd with 107 points.
What a way to wrap up the varsity sesaon! Belmont Hill was the only team that gave us a run for our money in our 2013 season, so we will consider this season a huge success. Congratulations to all of the Fay runners on an incredible dual meet season, a championship win at the Larz Anderson Invitational, and a 2nd place finish at the Roxbury Latin Jamboree. Go Moose!
