A much smaller than normal Fay cross country team hosted runners from Fenn, Nashoba Brooks, St. Sebastian's, and Pike on Wednesday. With all of our 9th graders away on secondary school visits, and our top runner out due to illness, we were both excited and nervous for Wednesday's race.
Race conditions were perfect - high 60s and sunny - a big improvement from the same meet last year where it was pouring rain! We had about 70 runners at the starting line and the race went off without a hitch.
Though our top group was a bit smaller than normal, we had a nice solid pack at the front of the group right before the 1st mile. Andrew Daphnis '15, Jack Thalmann '15, and Jonathan Walker '15 were all in contention for first place at this point. John Namgung '15 was not far behind and looked like he was really pushing the pace.
After the runners disappeared into the woods for a few more minutes, Andrew Daphnis '15 was the first to re-appear, with a Fenn runner not far behind. Jonathan Walker '15 and Jack Thalmann '15 were right behind with a few other Fenn runners in pursuit! As the boys sprinted up to the finish line, Andrew Daphnis was able to edge out the #1 Fenn runner for his second victory of the season (in a time of 11:56). Jack Thalmann and Jonathan Walker finished 3rd and 4th respectively. John Namgung was our 4th runner across the finish line in 12th place overall. Vincent Chen '15 rounded out our top 5 yesterday with a finishing place of 17. We are happy to have Vincent back racing after a hip injury sidelined him earlier this year.
Sally Lee '15 was the first Fay girl across the finish line, and the 4th girl overall in a very strong field. Her time of 14:53 is a huge improvement from her home races during the 2012 season. Mabel Gao '16 also had a strong race on the girls side, finishing as the 7th place girl with a time of 16:05.
While we had some strong individual races on Wednesday, we were not strong enough to pull ahead of a deep Fenn team. We ended up losing to Fenn by a mere four points (28 - 32)! We are looking forward to taking them on again next week with our entire team back on campus and ready to race! While Fenn proved to be a challenge, we had a strong showing against Pike, St. Seb's, and Nashoba Brooks. By winning those three races, our overall standing for the season is now 9-1. Congratulations, Fay!
