Fay wins the Larz Anderson Cross Country Invitational!

It was another stellar day for Fay Cross Country on October 26th. The team traveled to the Larz Anderson Park in Brookline for a championship invitational against 14 other schools. The conditions were perfect for racing: overcast and 50 degrees. The starting line was a sight to behold, with about 140 runners (all 6th-8th graders) lined up for the co-ed race. Fay got out to a quick start in the race, which worked to their advantage as there were a few tight turns in the first quarter mile. We knew that the team had a shot at victory, but they were going to have to work hard to make it happen, as the defending champions from Derby Academy were looking quite strong as well.

The first Fay runner to cross the finish line was Matt Thalmann (7th grade). Matt ran a phenomenal race to come in 2nd place overall, with a time of 14:21. Kent Ellertson (8th grade) was also part of the "top 10", placing 6th overall (14:46). Next across the finish line for Fay was Christian Schoen (7th grade). Despite a fall at the starting line, Christian got back on his feet quickly and finished in 14th place, in 15 minutes and 17 seconds. Aidan Baxter (8th grade), had the best race of his career, finishing in 20th place with a time of 15:41. Aidan's sprint to the finish line was incredible! JT Wheelock (6th grade) rounded out our top 5 today. JT finished in 39th place today, with a time of 16:30. It was great to see JT break into the top 5 for this race. Marissa Feller (8th grade) and Jack Thalmann (7th grade) also had strong races and helped to displace runners from other teams (and better our overall team score). After the finish, it was hard to tell how the team had done in the sea of 140 runners, though we knew that they had probably finished in the top three teams overall. After some nervous anticipation, the race coordinators announced the 2011 Larz Anderson Champion team: the Fay School! Congratulations to the entire Fay cross country squad, who has worked incredibly hard on a variety of workouts all season. This was a true team effort and would not have happened if each runner had not given it their all. We look forward to another championship meet at Roxbury Latin next Wednesday!
