Fay Wins Tough Parents Weekend Showdown with Choate
Fay were greatful to Choate Rosemary Hall for agreeing to travel to Fay on short notice to fill in for IMS during Fay's Parents Weekend. The Choate Thirds team was very skilled and physically strong. Additionally, Choate exhibited a level of mental strength and tactical nous that really challenged Fay's play. Choate had a solid game plan -- seemingly playing with three attackers at the start of the game, but they kept their formation fluid to respond to Fay's play. For example, recognizing that Fay had a numerical advantage in midfield, Choate dropped a forward back to curtail Fay's dominance in midfield.
The 50-50 challenges were tougher for Fay, becuase the Choate team was bigger, but Fay never shied away. The boys fought well and held their own against a mature Choate side and ultimately came away with the win. Forward Milton Jones scored two of Fay's goals, and defensive linchin Jordan Cox scored the 3rd with a rocket of a shot from outside the 18. Other Fay shoutouts go to midfielder Erick Obukhanich, and defenders David Park and co-captain Frank Li. George Bauer stepped into goal for the first time this season and fared well; he often started Fay's attacks with excellent goalkicks and distribution from the back. A final shoutout goes to Fay's 6th-grade winger Jacob Morse, who did not let the ocassion or opposition overwhelm him.
Choate proved to be the toughest opponents that Fay had faced so far this season. From that difficult match up, the Fay boys would have learned the importance of being patient and simplifying their play. Against such a well-skilled and physically superior Choate side, Fay did not have very much time on the ball, so it was important to simplify the play by keeping the ball moving at all times. That meant fewere dribbles, simpler and more accurate passes, and lots of movement off the ball to quickly create options for teammates. Fay did those things fairly well, but there is still plenty of room for improvement, so they will continue to work on all those skills in preparation for the visit of Groton School on October 25.
